We decided to visit one of the local parks that has a historic farm. On the first Saturday of the month, they have reenactors demonstrating what life was like on a 1870’s homestead (silent cheering over here)! They were making fresh biscuits in the log house, woodworking with some older boys, letting the younger kids feed the animals… it was awesome!
Eating fresh biscuits with cane syrup. They actually boil their own cane syrup the weekend after Thanksgiving. We were actually rushing to go when “The Babygate Incident” happened.
Owen got to see what toys were like back in the olden days. He later asked where they got electricity, and I explained it wasn’t invented yet. He looked gobsmacked… and he sputtered “But there was no TV or refrigerators or were they battery powered?” I said, “no batteries yet either.” He asked what they put in their remote control toys, and I said there were no RC toys. He looked totally amazed and finally said “I think I like my toys better.”
Over to the barnyard!
Chasing the chickens
Taking corn kernels off the husk. This kid loves heavy work. It took a lot of effort, and it was ALL he wanted to do.
Margot and Simon
This is Sweetheart; she is the only one who likes being picked up and will peck your toes until you pick her up!
Owen cracking corn to feed the cows and chickens.
Helping Margot feed the sheep since she was a little nervous
Owen feeding the sheep.
“Where’d all the sheep go?”
He cracked more corn and was onto feeding chickens
The outhouse was their real restroom for the park, so Owen tried it out!
We fed the cow hay, and Owen was the only person it would take hay from!
Just hugging my farm boy (Margot was running around trying to eat the tangerines that had fallen from the trees to our left ;)
Here is some of the video

POE SPRINGS
On Sunday, we were feeling a little stir crazy, so we drove to Poe Springs. It’s one of the few shallow natural springs near us (some are deep enough to scuba dive in!) Owen was so excited and said he was going to dive in and completely go underwater.
Here’s a cute video of him walking down
After the video is where everything went downhill. I started walking down toward Ryan, and he started walking too fast toward Ryan, and slipped and fell and scratched his back up. He started screaming and pretty much didn’t stop until we left. I think he was hurt, but more disappointed that he couldn’t go swimming. (He has this weird thing where he won’t get a scratch or cut wet for days post-injury.) So he yelled at me for a good ten minutes until I finally said we were leaving because he was bothering everyone else.
The look of dealing with a screaming preschooler while trying to entertain the toddler.
I tied up his shirt to try and get him to relax a little. He doesn’t normally walk around in crop tops ;)
It was really pretty, and while it looks green, the water was crystal clear. You can kind of see the bubbles in the center-left where the water is bubbling up.
We’ll go back with water shoes and a hand on the railings at all times!
