A New Park

We went to a new park (well, new to Margot).  She tried her first bucket swing- such a big girl!

Owen is Reading!

(Warning: I’m going to sound really braggy here, but I print this blog as a family yearbook, so I want the kids’ milestones in it!)

Owen has been steadily improving his reading skills over the last few months.  It started with words he memorized around age 2, and his repertoire has steadily grown since that point.  Now he can read himself books, including ones he’s never read before.  He seems to do best with books he hasn’t memorized because he can’t rush right through them.  He can read the stories in his Highlights High Five magazine.  To the dismay of Dad’s coworkers, he walked into his Dad’s office and started reading the quality policy on the wall- he got tripped up by the word ‘requirements’.  He is very interested in spelling now too!  He reads all contractions as the two separate words, which is really cute.  He sometimes adds words that he thinks makes the sentence flow better too, haha!  He oftentimes reads his bedtime books to us which is so amazing to see!

Most nights I go into his room before I go to sleep and find his little push light on with a book open on his pillow.

He is VERY shy about it though, so I try not to video or put him on the spot.  I happened to walk into the room while he was reading this book, and I was able to video him!

Such a unique kid… our own house of cards!

A Rough Lesson for Owen

Owen had his first big injury on Monday.  He fell off his swing onto his mouth, and his front teeth were pushed backward, and lips were roughed up pretty bad.  It looked like his teeth had scraped their impression into his lips.

“Don’t swing with your hands in your coat pockets.” is not a something I thought to say as I went inside to grab his mittens from the mudroom.  From what we’ve gathered, that is exactly what he did.  Since he swings on his stomach, he went right over the swing onto his teeth.  As I came out the backdoor, he was coming up the hill with blood pouring from his mouth.  After picking him up and getting him inside, he did not want to be touched let alone let me look in his mouth.  So I got him a wet towel to hold on his lips, and I was finally able to see his teeth.  I said “Owen do your teeth feel loose?” and he sobbed “Yes they are loose and crooked!!”

After an emergency trip to the dentist that involved a lot of tears and screaming, we learned that we don’t do anything except give him tylenol, advil, and time.  The teeth may darken, but they shouldn’t fall out or need to be removed, and hopefully they will move back into place.

As of 3/1: His lips are healed, but his gums are still swollen and purple.  He said it still hurts really bad, but he is asking for medicine much less, and finally slept through the night again.  He drools a lot and talks like he just got braces.

Here you can kind of see the angle at which they are pushed back.

Dancing in Bed

This is a few days old, but Owen loves to dancing to the music on Ryan’s phone… specifically The Beatles and System of a Down.  Here’s a little of what our nights are like.  He was a little camera-shy, but Owen actually knows a lot of the lyrics to Back in the USSR and (sadly) Haterz Everywhere, haha!  Don’t mind our messy unmade bed, I was washing linens.

Margot is on the Move!

Through a combination of rolling and inchworming, Margot can move herself a pretty decent distance to get things she wants!  I’m going to try and get video soon.  In this picture she moved from the hippo image on her mat facing me to facing away from me on the hardwood.  She rolled across the mat and then inchwormed on the hardwood!  I think she’s going after the penguin Owen took from her!

Roasting Marshmallows

After a fun afternoon at the park and some pizza for dinner, we headed outside to enjoy the warm weather.  Owen wanted to roast marshmallows, and we just happened to have some!

He wasn’t too sure about the taste of the burnt ones, so he just “warmed” his other ones.

A Whole New Owen

Owen got a major haircut this weekend!  He started getting bothered by his hair touching his ears, and he HATES haircuts (which is why I have to do it).  So we decided to buzz the sides!

It started with Dad making a special spray bottle for Owen to make that part more bearable.  Owen said “He looks happy!” while Ryan was impaling the unicorn.  He named him Kicker.

The haircut itself is really tough for O, so no pictures.  We started with a cool Mohawk type hairdo, but we just couldn’t get the back to stay down or his hair to stay flipped to the side.

To make O feel a little better, we treated him to lunch and ice cream at the park.  Margot came along too Smile

Later that night we decided to just buzz the top too and let it all grow back in together.  He can wear it up or down!

Still super cute but he looks SO different and younger!  Bonus, no more fighting over hair washing!

Playing outside

Owen hasn’t wanted to ride his bike in a really long time (so long we had to raise his seat over four inches)!!  Margot enjoyed the grass for a long time!

O’s bike is a balance bike, and he wanted to know when he gets pedals like Curious George.
